Ottoson Family Fund for Study Abroad

The Ottoson Family Fund for Study Abroad was established in 2018 by Mary Ottoson, Class of 1968, with gratitude for the excellent faculty members with whom she was able to interact during her time as a student at Lawrence.  The Ottoson family established this fund to create greater accessibility to long-term study abroad for student who otherwise would have not considered the possibility of international travel and immersion, allowing the university to foster a deeper connection between on- and off-campus experiences for all student regardless of financial resources.  Awards of approximately $2,500 will be given annually.  Preference for this award will be given to First Generation College Students and/or students who have not previously studied abroad.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

  • Eligible students will have been accepted to a Lawrence-affiliated or sponsored international off-campus study program for the following academic year.
  • Applicants must be first generation college students and/or have not studied abroad previously.  A first generation college student is defined as a student without one or more parent or guardian who has completed a bachelor’s degree.
  • Applications will be reviewed and evaluated based upon need.  Need will be determined based upon the student’s demonstrated need as determined by the Financial Aid office, the costs of the program in which they will be participating, and a statement submitted with the application. By submitting the application form (on the following page), the student understands that the Office of Financial Aid will access this information and that this will be used in the application review process. All applicants should demonstrate unmet financial need by completing their FAFSA information.
  • All recipients of the Ottoson Family Fund for Study Abroad are required to commit to submit a detailed and thoughtful impact statement about their experiences to the Off-Campus Programs Office upon their return.  This statement will be sent to the generous donors of off-campus scholarships.
  • The application deadline for the 2020-2021 Ottoson Family Fund for Study Abroad is April 27, 2020.  Late applications will not be considered.
