Mark your calendars! The club is hosting a book club discussion on Freshman Studies book Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History by Sidney W. Mintz. According to Associate Professor of Anthropology Mark Jenike, "The book is about interconnectedness of food, political economy, production and consumption, culturally constructed meaning, class, history, and more; and critically about how knowledge, technology, and other sources of power are used to create and maintain systems of domination and subordination that ultimately manifest as biological outcomes." Upcoming events:

October 20  |  Freshman Studies Book Club: Sweetness and Power       2-4 p.m.
Continuing our annual tradition of reading a Freshman Studies book from the current fall syllabus. This year, we will be reading Sweetness and Power: The Place of Sugar in Modern History by Sidney W. Mintz. This book is one of the first food histories ever written. Mintz brought an anthropologist's perspective to sugar's place in history; read more about the book and order it here. Please RSVP via Facebook.

BooksThe Freshman Studies professor who chose this book says this "For me, the book is about interconnectedness of food, political economy, production & consumption, culturally constructed meaning, class, history, and more; and critically about how knowledge, technology, and other sources of power are used to create and maintain systems of domination and subordination that ultimately manifest as biological outcomes.  Others will see it through different lenses.  It should prove to be a versatile text for teaching, as it can be read from multiple perspectives – history, globalization, colonial/post-colonial studies, political economy, Marxism, nutritional anthropology, food and culture, human biology, and probably more.  At 214 pages it is not overly long, and there is clear relevance to modern phenomena like added sugar in cheap processed foods, diabetes, time and money constraints that underlie class differences in diet and health, and the political economy of commodity food production, marketing, and regulation."

November 10  |  Silent Night Opera Performance    7:30 p.m.
A special evening of opera with the LU Club of the Twin Cities at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. The show, Silent Night, is based on the Christmas Eve truce of World War I and features fellow Lawrence alumnus Eric Simonson '82 as stage director. The performance "masterfully juxtaposes the bombastic sounds of war with serene songs from home, and stands as a heartfelt hymn to our common humanity." Come for the pre-show social hour and discussion with Eric at 6:30 p.m. and stay for the performance at 7:30 p.m. $43 per person, $33 for young alumni (classes 2002-2022). Group tickets must be purchased by Wednesday, October 10. Get tickets
