  • Revised the PCDA charge. See the PCDA homepage.
  • Instituted subcommittee structure. In order to broaden the reach and make focused progress in creating a more inclusive campus serving all Lawrence constituencies, we now have a subcommittee each for faculty and staff, as well as the student group CODA (Committee on Diversity Affairs). 
  • Implemented faculty and staff hiring practices with attention to diversity and inclusion at each step of the search process. For all tenure-track faculty hiring, each search committee includes a designated Diversity Point Person tasked with ensuring that a diverse pool of candidates is achieved and that the evaluation of applicants proceeds with minimal bias. All candidates are invited to address in their application materials and interviews how they will cultivate and support diversity and inclusion on the Lawrence campus. Search chairs and Diversity Point People meet with the Dean of Faculty several times throughout the search process. Representatives of the PCDA conduct interviews with each on-campus finalist. The PCDA has been involved in these new hiring practices with every tenure-track search and some staff searches since fall 2014.
  • Recommended to the President the hiring of a Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion/Associate Dean of the Faculty
  • Planned cultural competency workshops for administration, faculty, and staff.  Co-sponsoring with CODA educational opportunities about diversity designed for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Planned workshop on hiring and diversity for faculty and heads of staff offices.
  • Along with Gender Studies faculty, wrote a memo for faculty that provided information about trans identities, including information about names and pronouns and strategies for creating an inclusive learning environment for students of all gender identities and expressions.
  • Contributed to revisions of the policy on language requirements
  • In October and in August, several faculty members of the PCDA attended an ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest) workshop on Hiring and Diversity in order to learn about best practices in recruitment, hiring, and retention.
  • Served in an advisory role on various other diversity and inclusion initiatives on campus
