Closing Information

Unless you are a graduating senior, or a registered participant in Commencement activities, an RLA/RLM assisting with check-out, a reunion worker, or a summer resident, you must vacate your room and leave the campus within 24 hours of your last final examination. We suggest you begin packing now to ease the pressure of packing during finals.  Please sign up for a specific check-out time in advance with your residence hall staff, or in extenuating circumstances only consider the EXPRESS CHECK-OUT process. Students who have finals on Wednesday, June 5 must be out of their buildings no later than noon on Thursday, June 6. Students who have been granted permission to stay late must be out of their buildings before 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Summer residents are required to move into their summer housing assignment on the date provided by Campus Life.

Andrew Commons will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner at regular hours through Wednesday, June 5 (please check signage for special hours of operation during finals). The Café (Kaplan’s) will close at 2pm on Sunday, June 9. Kate’s Corner Store will close on Sunday, June 9 at 9:30am, or earlier if stock has been depleted. Culinary Cash ends at 8pm on Wednesday, June 5. There will be no swipes or culinary cash after 8pm on June 5 when your meal plan ends. Graduating seniors will have meals available for Brunch and Dinner on Thursday, June 6th and Brunch on Friday, June 7th in Andrew Commons. These meals are also open to undergrads, faculty, staff, and guests; payment will be taken at the door.

All personal property currently in residence hall storage must be removed by 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22 to allow for storage area cleaning. Storage rooms will be cleaned on Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24. They will be re-opened for storage at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. Please see storage posters for dates and times regarding summer storage.

Storage space is very limited and we strongly recommend that you take most of your possessions home. Please be sure to take the items you need with you. Articles will not be shipped to you, and buildings will not be open for your personal access over the summer. All boxes stored must be less than 27 cubic feet in size. The maximum number of boxes to be stored is six. Due to space restrictions and fire regulations, we cannot store empty boxes, bricks, lumber, carpet, or furniture. Bikes without motors can be stored in all halls. Bikes or boxes left outside of designated storage areas will be considered abandoned property and will be discarded. Storage cards (which are needed for each box) are available at hall desks or with your RLM. All personal property is stored at your own risk. Lawrence is not responsible for loss or damage of any kind.

Please use Express Check-Out in extenuating circumstances ONLY.  Express check out allows you to check out without a staff member present when you leave. You simply turn in an Express Check-Out envelope (available from an RLA/RHD) with your keys under your RHD’s door. By doing so you waive your right to contest any damages charges, but for those of you who have left your room clean and in the same order as check in you can select this option.

Pre-Check Out Procedures (May 20 – May 31)

  • Make sure all personal items have been removed from storage in order to prepare it for cleaning (by Wed., May 22).
  • Make certain to dismantle (if you have your furniture stacked, lofted, or bunked) and/or re-assemble any furniture before Friday, May 31. If this is problematic for you, we suggest utilizing courtesy/release hours established in your hall for this project. Thank you in advance for making necessary accommodations. There will be a charge if this is not completed by check out.

Check Out Procedures (June 3 – 6)

In order to have a successful and smooth check out process, please make sure to use the following guidelines.  Failure to check out properly will result in charges. In addition, please make sure your room is clean and all room furniture is assembled and in place in order to avoid additional charges.

  • Sign up for a check-out time with your RLA. Please use Express Check-Out in extenuating circumstances only.
Note: Some hall staff may have alternate ways they will conduct the check-out process-watch for hall specific details.
  • Wipe off all surfaces (desks, dressers, book shelves, sinks, closet shelves, mirrors, windows, etc...).
  • Take out all trash and recyclables. Please note that there will be donation trucks making pick-ups throughout the week.  See posters for details.
  • Remove all personal belongings including carpet and personal furniture.
  • Be sure all assigned university furniture is assembled and in room. If you live in a suite or quad, be sure to move furniture into its original locations (lounge furniture should be in common space, correct number of beds in each room, etc…)
  • Remove all tacks, nails, ticky tack, tape, or posters from walls and ceiling.
  • Remove any pictures, signs, or dry erase boards from outside of door.
  • Make sure screens and windows are in good condition and in place.
  • Empty and clean out wastebaskets.
  • Sweep/vacuum floor (please do not sweep litter into the hallway).
  • If you are NOT doing EXPRESS CHECK-OUT- Contact hall staff and arrange a check-out time to avoid charges (see hall specific details). Turn in room key and any bike room keys or bed pegs/pins.
  • If you have received keys for access to a house or chapter room space from Campus Life, make sure they are returned to the Campus Life Office (4th floor Warch Campus Center) during regular office hours or placed in an envelope clearly labeled with your name and slid through the mail slot to the left of the office door.
  • Keys to academic buildings should be returned to the Cashier in Brokaw Central during regular office hours (8am-3:30pm M-F). Please note that the Cashier is closed weekends, so graduating seniors must return academic building keys no later than 3:30pm on Friday, June 7.

All residence halls and group housing spaces will close for the summer at 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 9.
All students (except summer residents and reunion helpers) are expected to leave campus.

All check out procedures complete?  Have a wonderful summer!
