Frequently Asked Questions

For Prospective Lawrentians:

How is Lawrence responding to COVID-19?

The most up-to-date information on how Lawrence is responding to the global outbreak of COVID-19 can be found here.

Will I be able to visit campus?

In the interest of public health, as we all work to “flatten the curve” of virus spread, we have suspended all in-person visits to campus. As soon as we’re able to safely offer you a valuable and engaging visit experience, we’ll post those options at https://www.lawrence.edu/admissions/visit.

If I am not able to visit, how can I get to know Lawrence?

While we know nothing beats seeing campus in-person, check out our virtual suite of options to help you experience Lawrence and connect with Lawrentians personally. You are also welcome to take our virtual campus tour and find us on Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or Facebook.

Will this affect the timing of my admission or financial aid notification?

No, we look forward to being back in touch with admissions and financial aid decisions as scheduled.

Will the enrollment deposit deadline be extended?

Recognizing the extraordinary times we are living in—and the uncertainty it creates for so many of us—we welcome you to choose a decision deadline that works best for you. We’ve found that some students still wish to make their decision by May 1. Others would like an extension to May 15. And yet others prefer June 1, June 15 or July 1. We are reserving your seat in our class as well as any financial aid we have offered you—no matter which deadline you choose.

To choose your deadline option, please log into your admissions status page and let us know which of the deadlines you’d prefer.

Will extensions be allowed for final transcripts?

We will be flexible and work closely with students and their schools to ensure we have the documents we need without creating additional stress. Final transcripts can be brought along with you to campus to start the Fall Term should this be needed.

My school will be using Pass/Fail instead of letter grades for Spring 2020. Will that affect my admissions decision or scholarship?

No letter grades? No problem. We’re doing the same thing at Lawrence, which is why it will be acceptable for you to submit your final transcript to us with grades indicating a pass instead of a letter.

Can I still receive AP credit for the shortened, at-home versions of AP exams given in Spring 2020?

We will honor scores earned on the shortened, at-home versions described on the AP Central page of the College Board's website. More information can be found here.

Can I still receive IB credit for coursework completed in Spring 2020?

We will honor scores earned for IB courses as described on the International Baccalaureate's website. More information can be found here.

For International Students:

When will I receive my I-20?

At Lawrence, we send out I-20 and DS-2019 as part of the admissions package. Along with an acceptance letter, students receive their financial aid package, I-20 or DS-2019 and helpful information on  next steps needed to secure a visa.

For admitted students: If you have received an I-20 from Lawrence it is valid for visa application.

If my country has been affected by COVID-19, will I still be allowed to attend Lawrence?

We are closely monitoring situation and will alert you of any changes that may impact your enrollment but please know that you are Lawrentian and part of our community. We are arranging for students, who due to the virus are not be able to travel to campus this fall, to have the option to begin their studies online. We will provide our admitted students more detailed ion as it becomes available.

US embassies and consulates are currently closed or have long wait times due to the COVID-19, which means I have not been able to obtain an entry visa. Can Lawrence help?

When Lawrence University issued you an I-20 or DS-2019 document, we demonstrated our wish to have you join Lawrence. We cannot issue any other documents to assist in obtaining an entry visa, nor can we ask the U.S. Consulate or Embassy to prioritize your visa application. But please let us know of any issues or questions you have regarding the visa application process.

For visa appointments and processing times, please contact the U.S. embassy in your country for information and please feel welcome to let us know what you and your family need, or if you have any questions.

If I’m not able to attend Lawrence this fall, can I defer my admission?

You may defer your enrollment.  Students should pay their enrollment deposit to commit to LU prior to asking for a deferral of enrollment.  We have not had any issues with students getting visas after deferring for a year.  You will be required to submit new financial documentation as part of the reactivation process and to submit any grades of course work you may take during your deferred year.

Will extensions be allowed for final transcripts?

Yes. We will be flexible and work closely with students and institutions to ensure we have the documents we need for your enrollment.  Students can bring their final transcript to Lawrence with them if needed.

If the TOEFL is cancelled, how can I demonstrate my proficiency in English?

To ensure you have every opportunity to make the best of your Lawrence experience, we require that non-native English speakers demonstrate their ability and comfort in using the English language as part of their application for admission. We have multiple ways of determining a student’s language ability and will work with students on an individual basis. Your voice is valued at Lawrence University. Please contact us if you have questions.

My current school closed. Will you accept an unofficial transcript?

We can accept unofficial transcripts to make preliminary admissions decisions. Enrollment at Lawrence University is contingent upon receipt of a final official transcript, which students can bring to campus with them, if needed.
