The B.Mus. in Composition at Lawrence

The B.Mus. in Composition at Lawrence is a comprehensive pre-professional training program in music composition. We are committed to excellence and offer a curriculum that is strong in both composition and theory. In addition to composition study in private lessons, composition majors take courses orchestration, counterpoint, analysis and contemporary compositional techniques.

One of the great strengths of the program is our emphasis on performance. Students compose a large variety of instrumental and vocal chamber music and present frequent public performances of their music on Composition Studio Recitals. Qualified advanced students may be selected to compose a work for reading or performance by one of the conservatory’s large ensembles. Every year in the spring the LSO Composers Forum features public readings of new orchestral compositions by three to five student composers.

Our recent graduates have gone on to masters and doctoral study at top graduate programs that include the University of Michigan, UC San Diego, Indiana University at Bloomington, Duke, Yale, University of Southern California, NYU, Dartmouth, Bowling Green State University, University of Minnesota, SUNY Buffalo, Brooklyn College, Wesleyan University and Case Western Reserve. While at Lawrence, composition alumnae Daniel Miller '13 and Ben Klein ’05 won highly competitive Watson Fellowships.
