Winter 2012

Dear Parents & Guardians:

As winter term begins, the Career Services team continues to integrate Life After Lawrence NOW offerings into the students’ learning process. The study of liberal arts serves as a strong foundation for entering the world of work or furthering one’s education through the pursuit of a fellowship, scholarship or graduate school program, and we seek to help make the students’ transitions smooth.

One of Career Services’ goals is to provide opportunities for visibility into career choices and for alumni networking that compliment the students’ education. Highlights of last term include hosting the More Light! Career Conference where approximately 100 students had the chance to meet and speak with 25 alumni and learn their Secrets to Success and what Leadership in Life After Lawrence means.

In addition, 30 students networked and shadowed alumni in our Shadow Milwaukee program over the December break.

In collaboration with our faculty and the Office of Alumni & Constituency Engagement, the following highlights some of our offerings this term (registration deadlines will be communicated on campus):
Lawrence Scholars - Saturday, February 4

  • Keynote address: Life After Lawrence: A Look into Research and Discoveries presented by Kurt Albertine ’75, professor of pediatrics in the neonatology division at the University of Utah School of Medicine. Kurt will share insights on his research of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and some recent discoveries his team has made.
  • The keynote is followed by individual sessions of Lawrence Scholars in Business, Law, Arts & Entertainment and Medicine and a networking reception.

Think Globally, Explore Locally - periodically during the term
This initiative, intended to be easy to work into the students’ busy schedules, will give them an on-site glimpse into profit and not-for-profit organizations 15 minutes – 2 hours from campus, and will also help students as they start to connect in areas outside of the Fox Cities. We hope to offer a variety of sites to meet the diverse interests of our students.

  • West Business Services - February 9 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon
  • Quad Graphics - February 21 Time: TBD
  • Appleton Public Library - February 29 at 2:00 p.m. – TBD
  • WorkForce Career & Internship Fair - February 16 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Marquette University
    • Sponsored by WIPCCC (Wisconsin Private Colleges Career Consortium), the fair will have 100+ employers from the areas of business, communications, engineering, health sciences, computer sciences, government, the arts and non-profit on-site and available to speak to students about prospective opportunities.
    • Free round trip transportation will be provided from campus.
  • Spring on the Fox Career Fair – March 6 Time TBD
  • Fox Cities Chamber Career Fair – March 28 Time TBD

During winter term, we will be finalizing the details for our Spring Term Reading Period (May 4 -5) trips to Chicago (Lawrence Scholars in Business) and Minneapolis (Lawrence Scholars in Arts & Entertainment). We are pleased to have many alumni who have volunteered to host our students at their places of employment. Once the details are finalized, we will share them with the students.

Please encourage your son or daughter to participate in these events, as well as our various workshops and the on-campus recruiting visits from Quad Graphics (January 17 -18) and Sentry Insurance (February 15).

In an effort to be flexible and meet the challenges of students’ schedules, we have established “drop-in hours.” During “drop-in hours,” students can quickly meet with a staff member without an appointment.

If you have internship, shadow information or contacts at workplaces which may be of interest to our students, please let me know. We look forward to partnering with you to help our students begin their journey to Life After Lawrence NOW!

All the best in 2012,

Meany ’83
