Spring 2017

Career Symposium

Dear Parents & Guardians,

“It’s Minneapolis!”
- Brad Mueller ’17, Economics Major

“You need to take it!”
- Mary Meany ’83, Dean of Career Services

With news of students accepting offers being shared in our office, I am reminded of a conversation last term with Brad Mueller ’17 during which we were discussing the job offer he had just received that morning and we were interrupted by his phone buzzing. Knowing his first choice employer was located in Minneapolis, I encouraged him to take the call and I stepped out of my office while he spoke with the recruiter.  After several long minutes, Brad opened my office door with a smile and a high five which said it all! He had just received an offer to join Optum’s Consulting Development Program as a Senior Business Analyst.

While offers aren't typically received and accepted in the middle of an advising meeting in Career Services, never-the-less, we are pleased to report that the start of the term has been busy with students sharing their news of internship and job offers and graduate school acceptances with us daily.

Whether a student has an offer in hand or is just starting to explore their options for life after Lawrence, Career Services and the office of Alumni & Constituency Engagement are pleased to announce a great opportunity to engage and explore...our Career Symposium, scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, April 7 & 8. With the guidance and support from alumni of the last seven years and two seniors with accepted offers at Cerner and Navigant, we are confident that there is something for all class years and all majors.

Alumni will be representing a number of companies such as  Facebook, Janus Capital Group, BCDVideo, Northbridge Insurance, Google, Edelman Intelligence, Innovation Pavilion and more. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of alumni who are taking vacation days and traveling at their own expense from Seattle, Toronto, Denver, Boston and other locations to connect with the students and help them as they navigate their journey towards life after Lawrence – regardless of where they are in the process.

Topics will include: building and marketing your personal brand, navigating the early years of your career, making a social impact, utilizing a government major and more!  In addition to group sessions, many alumni are offering time to meet one-on-one for individualized conversations.

We are excited for our students to learn about the variety of organizations and roles that fellow English, physics, history, economics, government, anthropology, biology, math, music, psychology and geology majors have secured and hope that you will encourage your student to participate in this weekend’s events.  More details are available to the students in LUworks or by contacting a staff member in Career Services.

As always, thank you for your partnership!

All the best,
Mary Meany
Dean of Career Services
