I teach courses in creative writing (poetry), nineteenth century American literature, and contemporary poetry, with particular emphasis on women writers and writers of color.
I'm the author of two collections of poetry, Scriptorium (Beacon Press, 2016) and Horse and Rider (2010). I'm currently at work on my third book, an archive-driven collection of poems about the abolitionist movement in the nineteenth century U.S. I've received fellowships and awards from the American Antiquarian Society, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rona Jaffe Foundation, the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and other organizations. Recent poems have appeared in Ecotone, The Iowa Review, The Nation, and Ploughshares. I grew up in the mountains of Upper East Tennessee and am a proud first-generation college student.
