Black Flesh, White Cure: The Miracle of the Black Leg in Medieval Art

What does it mean to call an act a cure when one body’s restoration depends upon the violation of another? The Miracle of the Black Leg recounts how Saints Cosmas and Damian replaced a white verger’s diseased leg with the limb of a buried Ethiopian. Join us to hear art historian Dr. Denva Gallant’s analysis of medieval representations and her examination of how racial difference shapes the visual and ethical terms of the miracle. A reception will follow. This talk is free and open to the public. Dr. Gallant’s visit is made possible by the Harold and Mary Donn Jordan Fund for the Arts.
