First Annual Door County Jazz Festival

The Inaugural Door County Jazz Festival launched ecstatically in Vail Hall.

Björklunden Magic

For the second summer in a row, Björklunden welcomed audiences of all ages to enjoy free concerts in its serene and scenic setting. On August 7th, over 150 guests gathered in Vail Hall for a vibrant performance by the Door County Jazz Festival musicians—Cooper Luedke on bass, Josué Ríos López on guitar, and Quintin Fernandez on drums. All three are alumni or students of the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music, bringing a rich blend of jazz, rhythm, and improvisation to the stage. The evening continued with delicious BBQ offerings from the Savor food truck, adding to the festive atmosphere.

This concert was part of a full afternoon into evening of arts programming at Björklunden, celebrating several milestones: Lawrence University’s 50 years of stewardship of the Björklunden property, the 150th anniversary of the Lawrence University Conservatory, Door Shakespeare’s 30th year of performing in the Boynton Garden, and the Door County Jazz Festival’s inaugural year! Following the jazz performance, guests enjoyed a lively conversation with playwright Gale Childs Daly before settling in for Door Shakespeare’s production of Great Expectations in the Björklunden Garden. The event showcased Björklunden’s commitment to community engagement through music, theater, and culinary delights—all in one unforgettable day.

The second concert in Björklunden’s summer series took place on August 13th, with nearly 200 people enjoying the beloved Door County folk trio of Katie Dahl, Eric Lewis, and Rich Higdon. Performing outdoors in front of the Boynton Chapel on a perfect summer evening, the group offered – in Katie’s signature singer/songwriter style – two sets (and an encore!) that celebrated place, personal journeys, and community connection. Eric Lewis, a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and acclaimed guitarist lent his virtuosic touch to the performance. And, with Rich Higdon rounding out the trio’s rhythm section and stage presence, a delightful pageant of musicality and local spirit was offered up into the evening for all to enjoy, enhanced by the Savor food truck’s delicious BBQ.
