Program Overview
The Spanish, Latin American, and Latinx Studies program prepares students to succeed in a multilingual and multicultural world. The program empowers students to explore art, literature, linguistics, history, and film from the Spanish-speaking world. Students learn together and hone their skills in the classroom and beyond, with the Latin American and Spanish film festival, Björklunden immersion weekends, campus events led by student organizations, or one of eight Spanish-centric study abroad options. Our supportive language-learning community helps students meet their goals—whether that is advanced study, fluency for the workplace, or a Spanish teaching certification.

A recent interdisciplinary course exploring the intersections of art, music, and literature found in the hundreds of 13th-century songs and miniatures that are part of the Cantigas de Santa María, became fully alive through a D-Term course that featured a trip to Toledo, Spain, where the topics studied in the earlier course were turned into an exploration of the places and cultural dynamics that defined that stretch of European history. Twenty students and two alumni traveled with Madera Allan, Associate Professor of Spanish, and two other scholars from Art History, and Music, for a two-week course that celebrated the cultural legacies of the Middle Ages that endure in modern Spain.
