Program Overview
The Lawrence classical guitar program features a rigorous curriculum focused on technique and expression. The goal of the program is to give students a firm foundation on which to build a career and develop their musical identity.
Students are guided through technique challenges and repertoire via individual instruction. Weekly studio classes offer an opportunity to rehearse ensemble music, discuss relevant topics, and perform for their peers. The program focuses on building technique, confidence, and a deep knowledge of the instrument that culminates in junior and senior recitals. Along the way, students will encounter numerous opportunities to perform and collaborate, building their skills with each achievement. The classical guitar studio is a supportive community where students train to be better artists.

Types of Degrees
Guitarists may choose to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Music Performance (BM) with an optional emphasis on jazz and improvisation. Students who want to become licensed music teachers may pursue Bachelor of Music Education (BM in Ed). Many students also take advantage of the dual degree program in which students select another discipline to explore alongside their music studies. Past guitar majors have also pursued degrees in physics, studio art, economics, neuroscience, and English.

Music students have access to a variety of performance venues, from the intimate salon spaces of the Warch Campus Center, to the more formal Harper Recital Hall, to the large resonant interior of the Memorial Chapel. The new west campus building features a modern music production facility and bright studio spaces. Students will find casual spots for practicing, rehearsing, and hanging out.
