At Lawrence, you’ll find opportunities to perform, create, and collaborate in ensembles and productions that span orchestras, bands, choirs, jazz, opera, theatre, and more. Whether you plan to major in music or simply want to keep music in your life, you can find a place to participate.
Each season offers a wide array of performances—from string quartets to modern dance, new music ensembles that push the boundaries, to the ancient tradition of Tuvan throat singing, and from big band to solo piano.
Lawrence’s award-winning ensembles deliver more than 40 performances throughout the academic year. Most events are offered free of admission, and many are delivered via webcast.
From well-known plays and musicals to collaboratively-devised works and brand new plays featuring student voices, Lawrence University’s Department of Theatre Arts produces three exciting productions each year.

Music at Lawrence happens in many forms. Join ensembles and productions that challenge you, connect you with other musicians, and give you opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Production Studios
Musicians who know how to record, produce, mix, and master music and video enter their careers with a marketable advantage. We provide opportunities to help record the nearly 200 performances held each year.
Orchestras
Pursue excellent music making by drawing together threads from musicology, theory, history, and score study. You’ll also look at forms of expression like art, poetry, fiction, and architecture.
Jazz
With three large jazz ensembles and small group opportunities, grow and master essential skills in jazz and improvisation, and build your confidence as a jazz performer, soloist, educator, or composer.
Bands
Both the Lawrence University Wind Ensemble and the Symphonic Band offer high-caliber ensemble performance experiences and an exploration of a rich array of repertoire.
Choirs and Vocal Ensembles
World-class training prepares you and your fellow vocalists for exceptional performances in one of our award-winning choral ensembles. With three large ensembles, there’s a place for you in a choir at Lawrence.
Opera Theatre
Create musical performance experiences unlike any other. You will combine technique-building workshops with productions with your peers to hone your skills as a singing actor.
Lawrentian Spotlight
A Bluegrass Journey to Ireland and Beyond With The Litch Brothers
When Ben Lewis first arrived at Lawrence University, he intended to focus on jazz, but an unexpected shift toward bluegrass music quickly took hold. The senior from Phoenix, Oregon, now records professionally and performs worldwide with the Litch Brothers, including a recent trip to Ireland to perform at the Your Roots Are Showing, a premier folk music conference.
