About Survival Baskets and ORC
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Lawrence's Outdoor Recreation Club (ORC). ORC is a student-run organization that helps promote student-led, off-campus outdoor trips throughout the school year. ORC has a strong history on the Lawrence campus, and has grown to be one of the largest campus organizations. In an effort to include the widest variety of outdoor enthusiasts, our trips vary in length, skill-level, and cost. They range from free weekend outings to weeklong all-inclusive trips. Noteworthy trips in the past have included backpacking in Utah and Arizona, hut-to-hut skiing in the Rockies, kayaking in the Apostle and the Georgian Sea Islands, and winter camping in Minnesota. ORC also runs a variety of day and weekend trips, including mountain biking, hiking, XC skiing, snowshoeing, backpacking and canoeing/kayaking on the Fox River right next to campus. On campus, we sponsor outdoor adventure lectures and workshops, as well as campus-wide cookouts and other community outreach programs.
Thanks to the continued success of our Survival Basket Program we are able to maintain our low trip cost and supply all aspects of the club with appropriate funding.
Survival Baskets are bags of goodies which are hand-delivered to students’ doorsteps the weekend before finals week of each term with a hand-written note of encouragement. Each basket is packed with all sorts of food and they are designed to meet the diverse dietary needs of a stressed-out finals week student. Typically they include: apples, oranges, fruit juice, Sun Chips, Gardettos, Chex-Mix, popcorn, cookies, Ramen and various other snacks. Gluten Free and vegetarian options are available, and we also cater to food allergies. ORC Club members purchase, assemble, and deliver the food items to your students’ door.
Survival Basket profits support ORC activities on and off campus. In the past few years, Survival Basket funds have largely gone towards the purchase of new, top of the line gear. Recent purchases have included mountain bikes, sleeping bags, tents, and kayaks. Funding has also supported on-campus outreach programs and subsidized trip costs. Additionally, Survival Basket funds are used to subsidize Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses to promote safe outdoor recreation. We encourage you to order a Survival Basket for your student for each of the weekends before finals, and include a personal hand written message to support your student at this stressful time.
Please use the form below to order a basket for a single term, or save money by ordering for both terms. Your student will appreciate your thoughtful and supportive gesture as he or she begins final exams. Extra brain food helps, too! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Wini Waters (email@example.com), ORC’s president.
We hope your student will take advantage of the opportunities ORC provides. ORC is an open and welcoming group offering trips for all skill levels. Thank you for your time, and we appreciate your support.
