SYLLABUS
Math 140, Calculus I
Fall 2005, MWF 1:30pm, BH 422
Office Hours: My office hours are posted on the board outside my
office, and also under Contact Info to the left. I will also generally
be available for a few minutes after class. Email me if you are unable
to come to any scheduled office hours and if I have time, we can schedule
another appointment. If you want to ensure that you can see me, do not
wait until the last moment with questions.
Textbooks: The textbook for this course is Stewart, Calculus:
Early Transcendentals, 5th Edition. Any other sources we use this
term will be put on reserve under this course name and number in the library.
I encourage you also to look for additional materials in the library using
the catalogue.
Other Resources: See Study Materials to the
left.
Homework: Homework will be assigned on Friday of each week to be
due AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS on the following Friday, except HW 6, which
is due on Monday, Nov. 7, after reading period. Homework assignments and
due dates will be posted on the course webpage. Homework should be neat
and legible. Cooperation is encouraged, but duplication is not allowed.
Late homeworks will earn a grade of 0, and will be considered late after
class on Friday, but you may still turn them in to me for comments if
you wish. The lowest homework grade will be dropped.
Quizzes and Exams: There will be five ten minute quizes on Wednesdays.
They will be on the problems covered in homework due the previous Friday,
plus any definitions or theorems covered before the quiz. NO QUIZ SCORES WILL BE DROPPED, AND YOU MUST BE PRESENT OR LET ME KNOW AT LEAST A WEEK IN ADVANCE IF YOU WILL MISS A QUIZ TO ARRANGE A MAKEUP!!!
There will be two midterm exams given at 7:00 in the evening. The first
will be on Wednesday, Oct 15. The second will be on Monday, Nov. 10. The
exams should take under two hours to complete, but you may take as much as three hours if you wish. I will give you a room number
for the midterms closer to the date. The final will be on Wednesday of Finals
Week at 1:30 pm.
There will be no makeup exams or quizzes except in cases
of emergency or unavoidable conflicts. Airplane tickets are not acceptable
reasons for missing class. If you have an unavoidable conflict with one
of the exam dates, such as travel for sports or music, let me know as
soon as possible to make arrangements. I will not arrange a makeup
exam unless I know at least a week in advance, except in cases of sudden
emergency, in which case I will require a note from a dean.
Tutoring: Some tutors are available for this course
through the Center for Teaching and Learning in the basement of Briggs
Hall. Please TALK TO ME before you see them. After you have talked to
me, you can call the CTL (x6767) or email (ctl@lawrence.edu) to make an
appointment. Their hours of operation are 9-5 Monday to Friday and 7-9
pm Sunday to Thursday.
Grading:Your grade will be based on a weighted average
of scores on homework (10% unstarred, 5% starred), quizzes (20% total), the midterms (20% each), and the final (25%). The course will be graded
on a standard 90-80-70 scale.
