The Lunch at Lawrence series continues featuring Carla Daughtry, associate professor of anthropology and her topic Cooking Schools and Culinary Tourism: Status, Memory and Identity in a Dish. As the political, cultural and economic hub of Jordan, Amman is the headquarters of several non-governmental, inter-governmental and multinational corporations. Amman is also a major tourist destination for its biblical/ archeological/ geographic attractions. In this context, Amman is an ideal site for the study of food tourism due to a growing number of restaurant- and hotel-based cooking schools. At this Lunch at Lawrence, learn how culinary tourism showcases food as a symbol of status, memory and cultural or national identity. And, come learn a recipe or two. Presto! includes three days of music, education and community work around the Twin Cities, with visits to a homeless shelter, several local high schools and an education center for students with special needs. Join the club for a private tour of the exclusive Guillermo del Toro exhibit at the MIA, exploring the creative process behind one of the most inventive filmmakers of our generation. Based on Toni Morrison’s first novel, The Bluest Eye is a heartrending coming of age story about a young black girl in 1940s Ohio.
