Return to Lawrence University Habitat for Humanity Homepage
Global Village is a program through Habitat for Humanity International that allows participants to volunteer in countries outside of the United States. Global Village is so rewarding because money can go farther in countries outside of the United States. This means that multiple houses can be built globally for the same amount of money it would cost to build one home domestically.
This year spring break, we went to El Salvador through Global Village. We were in El Salvador from March 23rd to March 29th. Thirteen students went, along with our advisor and his wife.
It was a great experience. Our main building materials were bricks, dirt, water, mezcla and chispa (both made from different combinations of sand, rocks, cement and water).
Below are photos from our trip.
We worked through the Habitat for Humanity El Salvador affiliate in Sonsonate, El Salvador. |

We prepared bars that were inserted between certain brick layers. |
||
We made the floor by using a "pisonar" to compact layers of dirt. |
||
This is the family we helped. |
||
At every layer, we put mezcla between the bricks and chispa inside the bricks. |
||
We mixed the mezcla and chispa with the help of the masons. |
||
We dug out the dirt around the house to create room for a walkway to be added later. |

Our final day in El Salvador was our rest day. We got to see a volcano and some ancient Mayan ruins. |
