FRST 100: Freshman Studies

Objectives

Freshman Studies is designed to provide you and your incoming class with a common, rigorous introduction to careful reading, discussion, and writing across works drawn from a wide variety of disciplines. As a student in the course, your main goals should be to:

  • Read the assigned texts thoughtfully and critically. Record your thoughts directly in the text.
  • Interpret and critique the arguments advanced by the authors.
  • Vigorously discuss your ideas with your section and your fellow new students.
  • Express your thoroughly-considered ideas through clear and concise writing.

You will remember your Freshman Studies classmates, instructors, works, and papers for many years to come. It is easily the most often-discussed class at Lawrence alumni eventes. No other group of students at Lawrence will study the same reading list as you and your fellow classmates. Enjoy this unique experience, and make the most of it!
