Lyric Opera of Chicago

Lyric Opera of Chicago is offering a maximum of two positions to Lawrence University interns who can apply for any of six available internships. 

Development Internship

Lyric Opera of Chicago exists to provide a broad, deep and relevant cultural service to the Chicago region and the nation, and to advance the development of the art form of opera.
This internship will provide the opportunity to work on a variety of projects in preparation for Lyric’s 2016/17 season. This position will assist all major areas of Development, including Donor Services, Annual and Planned Giving, Individual Giving, Institutional Partnerships, Women’s Board, and Chapters, Guild Board, and Young Professionals.

Projects/Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

  • Assist with direct mail pieces, including proofing, editing, design input, and distribution
  • Research projects and utilize Tessitura for data entry and organization of information
  • Provide general assistance at key events such as Opening Night Opera Ball, Operathon, Lyric Signature Events, and others
  • Perform general clerical duties (filing, copying, mailing) as needed
  • Additional projects specific to each Development area as assigned

Required Knowledge and Skills:

Candidates must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Projects require the ability to prioritize and efficiently manage multiple tasks while ensuring sensitivity to confidential information and the ability to work independently as well as a member of a team. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) also necessary. 

Reports to: Development Coordinator
Time Commitment: 15-25 hours per week, 3 or more days

 

Digital Content Internship

Projects/Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

Assist digital content producer with:

  • Organization of video archives
  • set up and shooting video interviews and broll
  • editing using Adobe Creative Suite

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including Premiere, Photoshop and After Effects
  • Basic knowledge of creating graphics and motion graphics
  • Basic knowledge of production elements (operating DSLR camera, setting up lighting, recording sound, etc.)
  • Must be a self-starter and have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to details and ability to follow directions
  • Ability to partner and collaborate with subject matter experts and creative team to get things done
  • computer literacy is required, with an emphasis in Microsoft Suite

Benefits of Marketing Production Internship:

Projects/Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

Interns will gain firsthand knowledge of the video production process at a performing arts, events based organization. The fast paces, demanding work environment will help inters gain excellent communication skills, increase their ability to oversee and drive multiple projects, and to understand the role of a digital content producer in a not-for-profit marketing department. They will have the opportunity to collaborate and assist in content production from the planning stage through final execution. It is our hope that this internship will assist students in their current academic studies and/or future career in video production. 

 

Dramaturgy Internship

Projects/Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

  • Gather biographical material for program from management and/or artists;
  • Gather headshots for program;
  • Write program biographies
  • Assist with program galley distribution
  • Proofread each program galley and blueline
  • Collaborate with dramaturg in preparation of selected program articles
  • Collaborate with dramaturg in extensive photo research for program 
  • Proofread surtitle scripts
  • Undertake selected research projects as needed
  • Attend media group and full department meetings 

Required Skills:

  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Knowledge of opera highly desirable
  • Computer literacy is required, with an emphasis in Microsoft Suite
  • Pursuing degree in marketing, communications, business or related field
  • Interest in opera or the arts
  • Must be a self-started, detail oriented, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Pro, Gmail, Photoshop, Google Drive

 

Graphic Design Internship

Projects/Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

  • Design clear engaging graphic communications for print and web. This may include logos, direct mail pieces, branded promotional items, website and social media graphics, posters, flyers, and other marketing materials as needed
  • Work closely with Lyric staff to translate their messaging concepts into marketing materials

Required Skills:

  • Must have substantial portfolio and be able to document effectiveness of designs 
  • Must have extensive knowledge of Mac software, including all Adobe CS5 software
  • Web design knowledge a plus
  • Knowledge of PowerPoint helpful
  • Impeccable attention to detail, layout and organization
  • Must have a keen eye for design and photography, and strive to develop aesthetically pleasing end results
  • Ability to receive and process criticism on creative work
  • An understanding of the latest design trends and their role within a commercial environment
  • Strong of the latest design trends and their role within a commercial environment
  • Strong communication, time management, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to undertake multiple projects simultaneously

Marketing Internship

Duties Include but Are Not Limited to:

  • Assist in the creation and execution of mainstream advertising, signage, and promotional materials
  • Conduct best practice research to identify opportunities for Lyric's marketing campaign
  • Develop copy for e-marketing and online campaigns
  • Develop creative briefs for direct marketing projects
  • Research and source appropriate photography assets for marketing needs
  • Coordinate distribution or delivery of marketing materials
  • Identify, initiate and execute promotional opportunities 
  • Coordinate and process all promotional partner ticketing needs
  • Review and process responses for all charitable ticket requests
  • Coordinate needs f\and assist in day-of- operations for special events
  • Assist other members of the marketing team as assigned

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing undergraduate studies in marketing, communications or related field
  • Interest in opera or the arts
  • Must be a self-starter, detail oriented, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills: both oral and written
  • Computer literacy is required, with an emphasis in Microsoft Suite

Time commitment: 14-25 hours/week

Marketing Production Internship

Brief description of duties:

  • Organize project files
  • Handle customer service requests for patrons and prospects
  • Serve as a production liaison between internal departments
  • Maintain and organize opera program books & program closets
  • Coordinate program insert requests and deliveries
  • Serve as a second point of contact for creative services and print production such as proofing, routing, scheduling, project planning, and monitoring quality control

Required Skills:

  • Pursuing degree in marketing, communications, business or related field
  • Interest in opera or the arts
  • Must be a self-starter, detail oriented, have excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy is required, with an emphasis in Microsoft Suite
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Excel, Gmail, and Google Docs
  • Must be able to lift several print pieces/books at a time

Benefits of Marketing Production Internship:

Interns will gain firsthand knowledge of the marketing production and project management process and the operation of a professional repertory opera company. The fast paced, demanding work environment will help the intern gain excellent communication skills, increase his/her ability to oversee and drive multiple projects, and to understand the role of a project manager in a not-for-profit marketing department. They will have the opportunity to follow the production of marketing materials from pre-design planning through to the final production of print pieces. It is our hope that this will assist aspiring marketing professionals in their current academic studies and/or future career in marketing production and/or project management.

Public Relations Internship

Duties Include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor news publications and distribute articles to staff as appropriate
  • Maintain media log of press mentions
  • Fulfill photo requests from media
  • Maintain press contact lists
  • Proof publications
  • Assist with press ticketing requests
  • Distribute press release
  • Gather headshots, bios, and reviews of artists and productions
  • Provide phone support as needed
  • Assist members of the department(s) as necessary
  • Assist in preparation and management of press events
  • Send press invitations and manage RSVP list for special events

Required skills:

  • Good judgment and communication skills, strong writing and editing skills are essential
  • Professional, highly organized, detail oriented
  • Advanced knowledge of Google Drive and Microsoft Office, including Excel
  • Familiarity with Wordfly
  • Ability to work well with a team, some evening and weekend work may be requested

Time commitment: 14-25 hours per week

Ryan Opera Center Internship

The Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center was established in 1974 as the professional artist-development program for Lyric Opera of Chicago. Since its inception, the Ryan Opera Center has been recognized as one of the premier programs of its kind in the world. That standing is maintained by providing the finest up-and-coming singers and pianists with unparalleled training and experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Administration:

  • Assist in the processing of applications and requests for information for the national preliminary auditions including preparing materials for auditions, data entry, and processing large mailings.
  • Assist with designing program and logistics for 98.7WFMT Ryan Opera Center Recital Series tapings.
  • Assist with setting up Ryan Opera Center Board Meetings.
  • Assist in maintaining Ryan Opera Center files for concerts, recitals, invoices, auditions, and various marketing materials.
  • Assist with arrangements for the Final Auditions held in September.
  • Assist with preparations for Rising Stars in Concert held in March.
  • Other clerical duties as assigned.

 Production:

  • Assist in coordinating various aspects of Ryan Opera Center productions.
  • Assist in troubleshooting at auditions, rehearsals, and performances.
  • Assist in communicating schedule notices and updates.

Required Knowledge/Skills:
Successful applicants should be a self-starter and have a genuine interest in arts administration. He or she should have a working knowledge of Windows-based applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and other database applications. Candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills (including attention to detail), have a working knowledge of music, and experience in an office environment.
