Summer Institute for International Students

Students playing a game at orientation.

Program Description

The Summer Institute for International Students (SIIS) is held in the three weeks leading up to International Student Orientation and Welcome Week.  The program has been created to ease international students’ transition from high school in another language and culture into the academic learning community at Lawrence University.

In particular, the SIIS introduces students to learning in the liberal arts tradition.  Students will learn about and engage in the types of academic study common in American liberal arts institutions, including academic discussions, thesis-driven essays, and critical thinking about texts and lectures.  In addition to adjusting academically, students also have the opportunity to adjust to life on campus by getting used to the residence halls, finding their way around campus, and making friends. SIIS students join the Freshman Academic Institute (FAI) program for American students for both academic work and extracurricular classes.

Curriculum:  Students who enroll in the SIIS earn three academic credits that can be applied toward graduation requirements.  Credit is earned by the successful completion of two SIIS courses taught by Lawrence faculty:

  • SIIS Seminar -  a small, discussion-based, writing-intensive seminar that explores works from a variety of academic disciplines
  • Topics in Psychology - a larger, lecture-based exploration of the multifaceted world of the psychological sciences.

Co-Curriculum: Students further develop their academic skills through writing and discussion workshops, peer-tutoring sessions, and interaction with campus resources and services.

Extra-Curriculum: Lawrence upperclassmen serving as Program Assistants lead recreational and social activities such as bowling, picnics, hiking, and movies. At the conclusion of the FAI, students, staff, and faculty spend a weekend at Björklunden, Lawrence's northern campus on the shore of Lake Michigan in Door County.
