Voice students and student accompanists from the studio of John T. Gates perform Robert Schumann’s song cycle Myrthen. The unifying theme of the cycle is unyielding love. Myrtles (Myrthen) are flowers that are associated in some German cultures with matrimony. Schumann presented this cycle in an elaborately bound volume to his beloved Clara, after a long and troubled courtship, as a wedding present. The first song, “Widmung,” means dedication. It makes clear the personal nature of this gift: “You my soul, my heart, my bliss…” The final song declares the cycle like an unfinished wreath in this earthy life, but it would be woven to completion only by love itself when the lovers are taken on high.

Pete established The Treehouse Workshop in 1997 and Nelson Treehouse and Supply in 2011. He has designed and built treehouses all over the United States as well as in Japan, Spain and Morocco. His creations range from small structures that serve as play spaces for kids to full-scale homes and educational facilities. Each treehouse is a unique structure that must fit the living trees that support it and leave room for them to move and grow. Pete is also an active educator and evangelist for treehouses. The Treehouse Workshop offers hands-on workshops that cover treehouse design and construction. Nelson Treehouse and Supply provides design, consultation, construction and specialty treehouse hardware and plans.
