Can you loft or bunk the beds?

You may loft or bunk your beds by stacking your furniture with bunk pins, available at your hall front desk when you arrive.  Please do not build your own loft, as they are not allowed.  For more ideas on how furniture can be arranged in rooms, please check out this video or this document.

Why don’t first year students get assigned to Hiett Hall?

Students on the LUCC Residence Life Committee decided when Hiett was built to limit Hiett Hall to upper class students only.

Why type of flooring will I find in my room?

All of the halls have tile flooring except for Ormsby which has hard wood flooring. Most halls have a broom and dust pan available for easy cleaning. You can check out the dimensions of your room by clicking on the floor plan links.

Do you have microwaves in your building?

Since microwaves are not allowed in the rooms, each floor is equipped with a microwave. You will also find one in the hall kitchen.

Do you supply or rent out refrigerators?

We do not supply or rent out refrigerators but you may bring one of your own, up to 4.4 cubic feet.

 Do you have a fireplace?

All of the halls except for Ormsby and Kohler have fireplaces in the main lounges.

Why didn’t I get my first choice hall?

Every effort is made to place new students according to preferences. However, this can prove to be very difficult due to returning student’s preferences, your date of deposit and space available to first year students. We ask that new students keep an open mind regarding hall assignments, as each hall has a positive atmosphere with unique traits.

Where should I do my banking?

When you arrive to campus there will be a student services fair where several different banking representatives will greet you. At that time you can compare rates as well as find out what is close to campus.

What size sheets do I need? How large are the mattresses?

We recommend buying the extra long sheets.  Mattresses are 36" x 6" x 80".

Is lighting provided?

Each room either has overhead lighting or floor lamps. Many desks also have an overhead desk lamp built into the hutch. You may feel free to bring extra lighting to add a personal touch to the room or to brighten it up even more.

What should I bring to campus?

Here are some of the things you might want to consider bringing with you to campus. Talk to your roommate about some of these things to avoid bringing two of the same items.

  • alarm clock
  • plastic bucket/carry-all to take your toiletries to and from the shower
  • pictures, posters or plants to make your room feel like home
  • Ticky Tac (poster putty) to hang things on the walls, tape will damage the walls
  • clothes hangers
  • bed linens, blankets, pillows (we recommend extra long sheets)
  • towels
  • backpack or bookbag
  • television, stereo and headphones (so you won't disturb your roommate)
  • small refrigerator (refrigerators larger than 4.4. cubic feet are prohibited)
  • key ring

What should I avoid bringing to campus?

These items are against University Policy, you should avoid bringing them with you this fall.

  • hot plate, grill, toaster oven, toaster, space heaters (basically anything with an open coil is prohibited under fire code)
  • microwaves (they blow fuses), they are also available in each residence hall
  • halogen lamps (too hot)
  • candles or anything with an open flame
  • tapestries that hang from the wall or ceiling
  • anything that would require you to remove your window screen (AC unit, satellite dish)
  • pets (any type of pet, besides fish, needs to be approved by your floor before it can be brought to campus)

    • Hanging bar is 3'5" from bottom and 2'10" wide
    • Shelf has 6" opening but 8" total height
  • Dresser
    • Top drawer: 3.5" x 2' x 2'10"
    • Middle & Bottom Drawers: 7" x 2' x 2'10"
  • Book shelf: both shelves 13" x 11" x 2'8"

 

+ Mail & Address Info

All mail including packages are now delivered to the Warch Campus Center.  Students should always use the 711 E BOLDT WAY address and their SPC mailbox number for their campus address.  Using a street address other than Boldt Way will cause a delay as the mail will have to go through the USPS forwarding system. 

Students have 24-hour access to their mailbox in the Warch Campus Center and can pick up packages from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. M-F. Postage stamps may be purchased from the Warch Campus Center Mailroom.

The USPS recommends mail be addressed as follows:

+ Front Desk Operations

The Campus Life office at Lawrence University operates a front desk in each of the seven Residence Halls. These front desks are the focal point for the services that each Residence Hall offers. Located in the main lobby of each of the seven residence halls, the front desk often becomes a gathering area for residents looking to find others who are taking a “short study break.” On occasion Residence Life Advisors (RLAs) will host social activities while they are staffing the desk. Movies, board games, study groups, and other random activities have been known to spontaneously happen at or near the front desk in the late evening hours.

Front Desk Hours of Operation

The desk opens at 9:00 pm in the evening and stays open until midnight on both weeknights and weekends. During these hours the Residence Life Advisors (RLAs) staff the desk.

Services Offered at the Front Desks

  • Light Bulbs to replace university issued desk lamps and overhead lights in student rooms can be picked up at each front desk free of charge.
  • Garbage Bags for student use can be picked up free of charge.
  • Each front desk is stocked with various items, purchased by each Residence Hall's Hall Council, that students can check out for free or a minimal deposit. Hall Council typically determines what items require a deposit, which can be borrowed for free, and how long items can be checked out. If the student returns the items by the deadline, the deposit is returned to the student in full.

Note: Since each Hall Council purchases different items, for their particular front desk, this list can vary for each front desk.

  • Vacuum (all front desks)
  • Various cleaning supplies
  • Various Board games
  • Various DVDs
  • Various tools
  • Various sports equipment (balls, frisbees, etc.)

+ Hall Councils

Made of students who live in your hall, Hall Councils create opportunities specific to your community while promoting a positive hall identity through projects such as Hall T-shirts,  intramural sports teams, volunteer opportunities and social events. Anyone living in the hall can join to help create unique events and projects to improve your “home away from home” by contacting their RLA or RHD.

+ End of Year Storage

All items must be stored in boxes no larger than 27 cubic feet. The maximum number of boxes stored per person is six. All boxes will be placed in storage with a tag from the hall desks. Storage is available for suitcases and moving containers. Bikes are allowed to be stored during the winter and over summer break. Note: If you will need constant access to an item, please do not place it in storage.

Only Residence Hall Directors or their designated student workers will check boxes into the storage rooms. Retrieval of boxes is done through the Residence Hall Directors or designated student workers. Proper ID is needed in order to claim boxes.

Boxes must be claimed or retagged within 15 months of initial date of storage. Boxes not claimed or retagged within 15 months will be disposed.

As in the past, the residence halls do not allow the storage of lofts, furniture, carpeting, bricks, empty boxes (including computer boxes), or lumber. Furthermore, Lawrence University is not responsible for lost or damaged property left in storage rooms. Items should not be stored in locations that are not secured, basements or attics.

All personal property currently in storage must be removed by 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 to allow for storage area cleaning. Around that time, residents who wish to use storage should get tags at the hall desks and put items into storage beginning at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Storage hours are as follows:

Wednesday, May 28 9 p.m.-10 p.m. Removal of Belongings Only
Sunday, June 1 through Saturday, June 14 9 p.m.-10 p.m.

Summer Housing

On-campus summer housing is offered to 2014-2015 continuing students who are employed at least 10 hours per week by Lawrence University, are doing paid summer research, or have an approved summer internship coordinated through the Career Center. For more information, see the Summer Housing page.
