Fall 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Question: What do the following have in common?
Career Services, Kurt Amend ’80, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Epic, Skyline Technologies, Peace Corps, Bard Graduate Center, Fox Cities Performing Arts Center, City Year, University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy, Sophie Hernando Kofman ’14, Penske Truck Leasing and Lawrence Scholars in Business Midterm Reading Period Trip.

Answer: They are all individuals or organizations who want to help your students through the career exploration process during Fall Term – either on or off-campus!

We are only a few weeks into the term and the Career Services staff has been busy meeting students through 1:1 appointments, conducting mock interviews, presenting to the Summer Institute participants and various student leadership groups and visiting classes. As multi-interested and diverse as our students are, we aim to match this diversity by offering a variety of experiences throughout their four years at Lawrence. Recognizing the career development process is fluid and different for each individual, we have recently revised our Four Year Timeline to guide students through their exploration. All students are unique individuals and we meet them where they are in the process of discovery.

Responding to student feedback, we are pleased to launch the Freshman Visit. The visit will help us get to know your student’s general interests so that we can build a relationship over time and share resources and opportunities as appropriate. This is intended to be an informal “Meet & Greet” and students do not have to have answers or even the questions to ask when they visit; we will help them figure out those things!

Other ways we are helping students experience and engage include:

  • offering the Lawrence Scholars in Business Award – one or two students will be awarded $5,000 to help with internship-related expenses in summer 2016. Application deadline: Oct. 2.
  • working with Susie ’72 and John Kane to offer housing and two internships at KIPP Academy near Boston during D-Term. Application deadline: Oct. 23.
  • coordinating with our alumni in the San Francisco Bay area to offer “Shadow Silicon Valley” during D-Term.

In advance, thank you for encouraging your student to visit our office, participate in the different events and begin or continue the career development journey.

All the best,
