Recurring Events: Jazz Weekend
Sinfonia co-sponsors Lawrence University's Jazz Weekend each year in November. In 2006, Sinfonia stepped up its involvement by adding and organizing Lucinda's Dining Hall as a second site for LU combo performances, for a jam session open to visiting middle and high school students, and to provide lunch for visiting school groups. Additionally, we designed, ordered, and sold the commemerative Jazz Weekend 2006 t-shirts, helped set up and tear down staging equipment for performances, and sold concessions. In the years to come, look for Sinfonia to play a major role in the planning and execution of Jazz Weekend at Lawrence University.
Mills Music Missions
In honor of visits made by Sinfonia's founder, Ossian Everett Mills, to hospitals at the turn of the 20th century, Sinfonia today carries out the tradition of Mills Music Missions. These involve visiting hospitals, ritirement homes, nursing homes, etc., and performing music to people who would not normally have the opportunity to enjoy live music in their daily lives. At least once a term, Gamma Zeta chapter puts on at least one Mills Music Mission in the local area of Lawrence University. Mills Music Missions are not done for profit, but rather strictly for the purpose of sharing music.
