What
Exactly is Freethought?
Freethought is not a set philosophy, rather it is an
approach to philosophy. Freethought rejects faith and
authority-based thinking, approaching philosophy from a
rational open-minded standpoint. Freethought, according to
the Freethought Alliance, is an "intellectual and cultural
movement" which "strives to free the mind of ignorant
presuppositions and superstitions." Freethinkers include
many noteworthy individuals. Ideas which fall into the
category of Freethought include: Atheism, Agnosticism,
Secularism, Humanism and Skepticism.
History
Freethought began in the Enlightenment. It gained much
popularity during the 19th century, especially in the form
of secular and democratic movements. Today its branches are
growing rapidly.
