Lambda Sigma Meeting Minutes – October 15, 2001

Excused:  Elizabeth Florek, Brain Payne, KT Raschko, Amy Seeboth, Jon Van Laarhoven, Alison Williams

Meeting Organization:  Wenjie talked about the new plan for meetings so that they will be organized and to the point.  Each committee should meet separately, and if there is something they want to bring up at the meeting, the chairman should contact Wenjie by 9:00 pm on the Sunday before the meeting.  This way she knows what will need to be covered at the meeting.  The meetings will run much smoother if discussion takes place during committee meetings and a final suggestion is voted on at the group meeting.

Halloween Party

Erin K. talked to YMCA and found out that they have about 600 kids (approx. 400 that are age 6-10).  The YMCA will be distributing informative slips to local schools that will be sent home to parents.  Parents must RSVP by Oct. 25.

Poonam found out that we can get sugar cookies, already baked, from Downer for 4 cents per cookie.  Because the cookies come in boxes of 300, we decided to order 600 cookies.  If we do have extra cookies, we can sell them around campus.  Poonam will be finding out about icing.

The selection committee is in charge of decorations.  Some of their ideas so far include orange and black streamers, balloons, and fake cobwebs.  They will also be in charge of getting the cups, napkins, and plates.

Sarah M. will find out what the max. capacity for fire code is at Lucinda’s.

We’re looking for members that can sing Halloween songs and someone to play the piano.  Wenjie will be renting out the piano and several other members will find Halloween music.

Wenjie passed around a sign-up sheet for shifts at the Halloween Party.  If you were not at the meeting, contact Wenjie to let her know when you can help out at the event.

Outreach Committee:  Chris S. brought up the idea of adopting a family for the holiday season.  We would raise money and then buy food, etc. to give to them so that they can have a nice holiday.  Some members were concerned that this would conflict with finals week, and others thought that most of the work could be done before finals week.  Outreach will find out more about the project and we will discuss it again at the next meeting.

Amy F. called around to find out about places that need volunteer help.  The Emergency Shelter for Fox Valley needs people to run their front desk.  Harbor House currently needs help painting the basement, but help is also needed for cleaning, cooking, and playing with the kids.  The group showed interest and Amy will be finding out more information.

Selection Committee:  Mary covered what the selection committee talked about at their last meeting.  This includes:

-         Sending out an informative pamphlet to freshmen at the end of first term, and sending out the application at the beginning of second term.  They thought this would be more sensible than sending out the application twice.

-         Increasing the number of info sessions.  They felt that a lot of people could not attend either of the two sessions last year.  At the info sessions, they want to emphasize that Lambda Sigma is not a “huge time commitment” and that even if someone is busy with other activities, they can still make room for Lambda Sigma.

-         Putting another step in the application process.  This step would be a big group meeting where we would observe how the applicants work together and use creative problem solving.

-         Redoing the rejection letter.  They thought that it would be better to leave out the numbers.

-         Keeping the two-tier selection process.

-         Simplifying the initiation.  It was voted at the meeting that our initiation was over-board and that we should do something simpler for the next group of initiates.

Alumni Grant:  We have the ability to receive a donation from the Class of ’65.  They are giving grants to organizations that sponsor events that will enrich Lawrence.  To be considered for a grant, we have to fill out a proposal and turn it in by the Wednesday of the sixth week of each term.  The event has to be open to all Lawrence students.

Bjorklunden Trip:  A sign-up sheet was passed around for everyone to sign up for which van they will be taking to Bjorklunden, or if they will be unable to come along.  If you were not at the meeting, please contact Wenjie and let her know what your plans are for that weekend.  The first van is leaving on Friday, Nov 9 between 5 and 6 pm, and the second van is leaving between 10 and 11 pm (following the concert).

Ushers are needed for Jane Goodall’s presentation in Stansbury Hall on Friday, Oct. 26, at 9:30 am.

There was an error in last week’s minutes.  Erin Grier was excused from the meeting.
