At Lawrence: Past & Present Rowing

Milwaukee-Downer Women's College had a long history of rowing. That tradition was later re-established years after Milwaukee-Downer College merged with Lawrence College to create what is now Lawrence University. The current rowing team is proud to be able to continue the tradition that was started by those women. It is an exciting time for current rowers when the Milwaukee-Downer Women come to Lawrence for reunions. Past and present rowers descend upon the boathouse to share memories, and talk about how much the team has changed.

The Community: Two Clubs, One Boathouse

In the early 1990s, donors sought to start a rowing program in the Fox Cities area. This effort resulted in two new groups: Lawrence University Rowing Club and Fox Valley Rowing Club. We share the same boathouse, along with some equipment. While LURC is tied to the University and operates solely through students, FVRC is community based, run by working men and women who love the sport.

Through FVRC, the Appleton Parks & Recreation Department offers two Learn-to-Row classes every year. This is a chance for people who have never taken part in the sport to try it out in a safe environment. Upon completion of the class, they can elect to become members of the club. FVRC also houses the many singles owned by individual rowers, who go out at the crack of dawn to enjoy the scenic Fox River.
