Faculty development grants

Faculty can apply for small grants from the Office of the Provost to support faculty development. These grants come in two general categories:

  • Project grants: typically used for research, scholarship or creative activity; cost share on external grants; workshops or curricular development; and other sorts of exciting activities.
  • Travel grants: support professional travel for conferences and meetings.

Mellon Senior Experience grants

Lawrence has a multi-year grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the Senior Experience program. The grant director (for 2013–14, associate professor Bob Williams, Education) makes internal awards for activities that support outstanding Senior Experiences for Lawrence students.

  • Direct awards to students. Students may apply for a mini-grant to support out-of-pocket expenses associated with their planned Senior Experience project. Commonly supported expenses include domestic and international travel for field work or access to primary sources, and project materials and supplies. A faculty recommendation is required. The student application form and faculty recommendation form can be found on the Faculty Forms page.

  • Department pool for small student awards. Some departments, in which modest expenses are common for Senior Experience projects, have arranged with the grant director to receive a pool of grant funds. The department is then responsible for reviewing student applications, making mini-grants for deserving Senior Experience projects and monitoring student use of the funds. If your department or program is interested in exploring this arrangement, contact Bob Williams at robert.f.williams@lawrence.edu or ext. 6276.

  • Program- and department-level grants. The Mellon grant funds may also be used to support programming that engages many students and contributes to their development of ambitious, creative and successful Senior Experience projects. Recent examples have included visiting speakers who spend a weekend with students at Björklunden, field trips, international travel for a whole class or other cohort of students and a departmental "fair" that showcases Senior Experience projects and connects seniors with lower-division students. Got an interesting idea for promoting extraordinary Senior Experiences in your department or interdisciplinary program? Contact Bob Williams.

Internal grant funds are limited; the sooner you apply and the more thoughtful your request, the more likely it is the Provost will be able to support your project.
