When does the site go live?
March 21, 2013
I heard X was already using it, why not me?
We have a small group of staff people who’ve been early adopters on the site. They’ve helped us iron out the ugly stuff so you don’t have to deal with it.
Will I have to move over all of my content?
Yes and no. In an ideal world, the answer would be yes because we’d all have free time to spend on this. We, however, do not live in an ideal world. While we’ve long planned on doing a lot of the content migration ourselves, the more you can do the better off we’ll be.
While we’re making a huge leap forward in terms of usability, there still is a learning curve – it’s nothing like Dreamweaver, promise – and by helping us move your content over, you’ll know how to make changes after we launch.
Send Rachel an email if you want to know more about what it means for you personally.
What do you mean by “lean and mean?”
We would love for the site to launch with only the information that is absolutely required. One of the problems the current site suffers from is the “kitchen sink” approach. We’d like to flip that on its head; we should let users tell us what they need rather than try to cover every conceivable angle.
Another definition of this would be to consolidate things. One page to explain things rather than three; that kind of thing.
I want a personal website. That’s going to happen, right?
WordPress will be available to all faculty and staff for personal sites. We’re going to go slow with the roll-out as we’re spending most of our time making sure the main site is awesome, but yes, you can have a personal site based on WordPress.
If you already have a site, we won’t do a thing to it. It’s yours, after all. If you want to migrate to something new, we’ll make sure options are available.
If you want to design and code up your thing, that’s cool too (within limits if hosted by LU).
I need to make changes to our current site for the Winter Term, should I go ahead and do that?
Yes. The current site is our official site until we launch in late February. Any edits or changes that are needed for the Winter Term should be made in both places. This will, of course, only be necessary until we launch.
So, when it’s done, it’s done, right?
Ha! Nope. We’ll be adding new features and tweaks for a long time. We’ll also make changes based on your feedback. Besides, it’s the web where nothing is ever “done.”
