In partnership with the American String Teachers Association (A.S.T.A.), Lawrence University was selected to implement a String Project - a teacher-training program for college students that also provides area children with affordable instruction on the violin, viola, cello and string bass. Classes are taught by Lawrence University Conservatory of Music string majors under the supervision of Lead Teacher Carrie Gruselle, a certified, experienced strings instructor.
Students are divided into three orchestras, Dolce, Allegro and Presto. The Dolce orchestra is for beginners in grades 3–5. Allegro is an orchestra for those in their second or third year of study on their stringed instrument. Students are Dolce graduates who wish to continue playing in an orchestra or students new to String Project who wish to experience ensemble playing for the first time. Presto consists of students who have received instruction for three years or more prior to enrolling.
Students in all orchestras attend two rehearsals each week. Two 15-week semesters include “informances” and performance opportunities.
