Have you ever wondered what makes a musical moment exciting or poignant? Music theory provides the tools to understand the basics of music and explore how a piece is constructed. A performer who understands theory becomes a more expressive musician; phrasing, dynamics, and other expressive elements are tied to a composition’s architecture. Music theory can also aid in memorization; rather than memorizing a large number of unrelated notes, one begins to visually and aurally recognize melodic patterns, chords, or harmonic progressions.
The Academy offers customized theory and aural skills classes for interested Academy students of any age or level. Introductory theory is available for youth or adults. Partner lessons or small group classes are available for students of similar age and ability; this is particularly useful for students who are preparing for The Royal Conservatory’s Music Development Program assessments. For those preparing to enter college as a music major, private theory lessons are available.
Classes are scheduled according to student availability and take place in the Conservatory West Conference Room, 313 West College Avenue. Classes are taught by Ann Boeckman, Lawrence Conservatory instructor of theory, aural skills, and basic keyboard skills.
Please contact the Academy office at 920-832-6632 or acad_music@lawrence.edu to schedule theory lessons or classes.
