Artist, Writer, Publisher, Printer: The Art of the Book in Wisconsin

Given the importance and influence of the paper industry in Wisconsin, this exhibition will celebrate the creative potential of the paper medium through a presentation of the diversity of book arts in the state. In observance of the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial, it will explore the historical roots of the private press movement and emphasis the aesthetic value of papermaking and its importance to bookmaking.

Synaesthesia: Encounter of the Senses

As sentient beings, our perceptions of the world are informed by our five senses. While we usually think of the senses functioning separately, synaesthesia is a condition in which one sense triggers or blends with another. This exhibition of installations will present work that explores the ways in which sensory experience can influence moods and evoke memories.

American Painting from the Tweed Museum of Art
January 23 - March 14, 1999

This exhibition features paintings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, drawn from the American Collection at the Tweed Museum of Art, University of Minnesota-Duluth. These works represent the unique American characteristics of the Hudson River Valley School, Luminism, as well as European-influenced Impressionism and "American Barbizon."

Connections: Recent Gifts and the Permanent Collection
April 10 - May 16, 1999
Opening Reception: Friday, April 9, 1999, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

This exhibition will present highlights from Lawrence's permanent collection by combining recent gifts with old favorites. Thematic groupings will demonstrate how objects from diverse historical periods and in various mediums and styles, can exhibit similar characteristics.
