Art Department Faculty Exhibition

An exhibition of recent work by Lawrence University's studio faculty opens on Friday, November 15, 1996, in the Wriston Art Center Galleries. The exhibition features work by Alice King Case, Helen Klebesadel, Todd McGrain and Charles Timm-Ballard.

Alice Case, Lecturer in Art & Supervisor of Art Education, will be displaying work in a variety of media including charcoal drawings, oil paintings and computer-generated prints. Case, who is continuing her studies at the Massachusetts College of Art, finds inspiration for her work in the natural world and often experiences "such joy through the tools that I use, that the contact with the paper becomes an obsession." She explains, "I work quickly, and energetically, rarely pausing to re-work a piece." Helen Klebesadel, Associate Professor of Art, views making art as an "act of self-determination and empowerment." With an MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Klebesadel layers her paintings with references to "art history, Greek mythology, literary and social theories, cultural icons, folklore, and personal experience." Todd McGrain, Assistant Professor of Art, finds that his approach to creating art "stems from a tradition that emphasizes materials and process." McGrain, who also earned his degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, adds, "A single piece of my work may include casting, carving, and construction. My work is never predictable because I enjoy the challenge of employing physically incompatible processes." Charles Timm-Ballard, Frederick Layton Visiting Professor of Art, joined the department in 1994 after receiving his MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He will display his recent works in ceramic which explore how "personal psychology, memory, and cultural history act on perception." He explains that, "the investigation of the forms of landscape-referential imagery allows me to explore how personal and cultural signs become embedded in visual images."

The faculty will present a panel discussion about their work at 6 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 1996, in the Worcester Auditorium of the Wriston Art Center, 613 East College Avenue, Appleton. A reception will follow from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will continue through December 15, 1996. For more information please telephone 414-832-6621.
