MEMORANDUM

TO: Members of the Lawrence University Community

FROM: Robert C. Buchanan, Chair, Presidential Search Committee

DATE: May 30, 2003

SUBJECT: Search Update

The presidential search is underway, and I am writing to provide a report on the committee's progress and plans.

The search committee met on May 8 to plan the search and to discuss and revise the presidential prospectus, which was drafted by our consultants, the Academic Search Consultation Service of Washington, D.C. This prospectus is based on various university publications and documents, as well as a two-day visit to the campus by representatives of our consulting firm, which included conversations with many of you. You will find the completed document on the Lawrence website.

The prospectus includes a list of desired presidential characteristics. We urge you to review the list and suggest people you know who could serve effectively as Lawrence's next president or who might know potential candidates. Please forward their name(s) to me in care of Stephanie Conway (sconway@frpaper.com), and we will write to them immediately.

You also may refer names to Barbara Taylor at the Academic Search Consultation Service, who can be reached by phone at 703-527-0138 or by e-mail at bet@academic-search.org.

The search committee is well aware that the success of our search depends on the involvement of all members of the Lawrence University community. By nominating strong candidates, you can be immediately and critically involved in the search process.

Over the next few months, we will generate the candidate pool through nominations received from you, other colleges and universities, friends of the college, advertising in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the work of our consultant.

The search is off to a good start. We will write to you again as we enter subsequent stages of the process.
