Ted Chapin, ’72

Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies, by Ted Chapin, ’72. Hardcover, 368 pages, Knopf, September 2003.

Ted Chapin is president of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization in New York. He has been chair of the advisory committee for the Encores! series at City Center since its inception and also sits on several arts boards, including the American Theatre Wing and the Tony Award Administration Committee.

As a student in 1971, he was production assistant (gofer) on the original production of Follies and, as a college assignment, kept a journal of everything he saw or heard. Thirty years later, he has been able to document — in unprecedented detail — how a musical actually is made.
