Bassist and West Coast mainstream-jazz heavyweight John Clayton and his son, acclaimed jazz pianist Gerald Clayton, are replacing jazz pianist Lyle Mays, who has had to cancel his Lawrence appearance for personal reasons.
Grammy Award–winning bassist/composer/bandleader John Clayton and his son, pianist Gerald Clayton, a two-time Grammy Award–nominee, are consistently requested by the movers and shakers in the jazz industry. As a testament to John’s immense talent, he served as the artistic director of Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1999 through 2001 and has written for Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Natalie Cole, Queen Latifah and many others. The New York Times has saluted Gerald’s “Oscar Peterson–like style” and “huge, authoritative presence” and the 2008 DownBeat Readers Poll named him one of the top up-and-coming pianists to watch.
