During a routine check of residence halls during Winter Break, Lawrence University staff found what appeared to be potentially harmful chemicals in a student room in Hiett Hall. Local authorities were contacted and appropriate safety measures were taken immediately. Because of the break, the students living in the room were not on campus, but they were made aware of the situation. The police investigation is continuing and, while the findings are not yet available to us, we have been told that one or more of these students may face criminal, drug-related charges.
Lawrence takes matters of safety and involvement with illegal drugs very seriously, and we are constantly vigilant with regard to health and safety threats to the Lawrence community. In addition to the potential for criminal charges, students who violate university policy are also subject to disciplinary action by the college, which is a confidential process. The university is cooperating fully with the investigation, and all necessary steps have been taken to ensure the safety of Lawrence University students, faculty, and staff.
As a campus community, we are steadfastly opposed to the use of illegal drugs, and we remain committed to ensuring a campus climate that is drug-free, safe, and lawful.
It is Lawrence University policy not to publicly comment on matters that are subject to police investigation and we ask that all questions be directed to the Appleton Police Department.
