Professor of Music Janet Anthony and her cello are veteran travelers, actively and frequently teaching, mentoring, and performing around the world.
Since 1996, she has made at least yearly trips to teach at the Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, or at its summer camp in Leogane and has been featured on national television and radio broadcasts in that country. Since 2002, she has also taught at the École de Musique Dessaix Baptiste in the southern coastal city of Jacmel and at music schools in Christianville and Marmalade.
After her first visit to Haiti, she began to recruit Lawrence students and colleagues to join her and, as of the summer of 2004, 25 had participated in one or another of the programs. Most recently, she spent part of her Winter Term 2004 sabbatical in Haiti, performing three concerts in Port-au-Prince before political unrest forced her to leave the country much earlier than planned.
Elsewhere in the world, with funding from Lawrence's Freeman Foundation grant, she traveled with the Lawrence Chamber Players to Hanoi, Vietnam, in April to teach and perform at the National Conservatory of Music. In July, she continued her work with Duo Klébér, performing concerts in Italy and Bosnia.
