For 14 years, George Mitchell enjoyed an illustrious career in the U.S. Senate. For six of those years, he was the Senate majority leader, until leaving office in 1995. Since that time, he has taken on many important and historic leadership roles. His work as chairperson of the peace negotiations in Northern Ireland earned him worldwide praise, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the United Nations (UNESCO) Peace Prize, as well as a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Most recently, he served as chairman of the special commission investigating allegations of impropriety in the bidding process for the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
