For the last 34 years, Dr. James McPherson has taught at Princeton University and since 1991 has served as the George Henry Davis Professor of American History. McPherson has authored 11 books, including Marching Toward Freedom: The Negro in the Civil War (1968), Ordeal By Fire: The Civil War Reconstruction (1982), and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (1988). His most recent book is entitled Reflections on the American Civil War (1996).
