Cornel West, professor of Afro-American studies and philosophy of religionat Harvard University, is widely regarded as one of the most eloquentparticipants in the ongoing racial debate. He is the author of severalgroundbreaking books, including Jews and Blacks: Let the Healing Beginand the best-selling Race Matters. His most recent works includeRestoring Hope, a compilation of interviews with leading African-Americans discussing hope and despair in black America, and the forthcomingBorn Without Skin. Since 1994, West and Sylvia Ann Hewlett have co-chaired the National Parenting Association's Task Force on Parent Empowerment.He also was appointed a member of President Clinton's recent NationalConversation on Race initiative.
