Robert Ballard, senior scientist, chairperson and founder of the JASONFoundation for Education, is perhaps best-known for his discovery of the sunkenR.M.S. Titanic in 1985. He and his colleagues designed a robot, the JasonJr., to view the Titanic and its interior. From that experience, Ballarddeveloped the JASON Project, an international, interdisciplinary science andtechnology program for teachers and students. Committed to exploring the least-known regions of our planet, Ballard has discovered giant worms off the coastof the Galapagos Islands, underwater volcanoes, artifacts, and the remains ofancient trading vessels at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. He has writtenextensively about his explorations, has been honored with several awardsincluding the 1990 Smithsonian Award in Education and Academia, and hasappeared on numerous television programs, including National GeographicExplorer.
