The renowned peace activist and former visiting professor of religious studies at Lawrence University rose to prominence during the 1960s as a leader in the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War movements. Reverend William Sloane Coffin Jr. gained national attention as one of the seven "Freedom Riders" arrested and convicted in 1961 while protesting local segregation laws in Montegomery, AL. The conviction was later overturned on appeal. The former chaplain at Yale University has also written several books, including his autobiography "Once to Every Man".
