One of the most celebrated musicians of his generation, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis has helped to propel jazz to the forefront of American culture. The winner of nine Grammy Awards throughout the course of his career, Marsalis is a distinguished performer in both jazz and classical music. In 1997, he became the first jazz artist to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize in music, for his composition "Blood on the Fields." In 2001, he was awarded the United Nations designation "Messenger of Peace" by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
