Two Types of Article Indexes

2. Subject Indexes

  • Is your topic in a particular subject area?
  • Do you want an expert's perspective?

If so, use a subject index. Subject indexes specialize in a particular subject, and the articles indexed are generally from scholarly sources. Examples of subject indexes and the kinds of articles they identify are:

RILM
Indexes articles in music-related subjects such as theory, music history, and analysis.
Historical Abstracts
Indexes articles in world history
Web of Science
Indexes articles in biology, chemistry, physics, etc.
