Seeley G. Mudd Library Policy on Privacy and Confidentiality

The Seeley G. Mudd Library maintains the privacy and confidentiality of all library borrowers' records and of all other information relating to an individual's use of the library's resources and services. Accordingly, the Library will not disclose such information except as required by law.

Except as provided below, the Seeley G. Mudd Library may release information about an individual's library transactions only to that individual.

Information covered under this policy includes, but is not limited to, an individual's circulation records, address and other registration information, reference or informational questions asked, surveillance tapes of the individual, interlibrary loan records, or other use of library services or participation in library-sponsored activities.

When asked for information about faculty, staff, and students, by a University employee or student, library staff will provide only published campus contact information. All requests from non-University-related individuals for information about students will be referred to the Dean of Students. All requests from non-University-related individuals for information about faculty and staff will be referred to the Director of Human Resources. If the requestor, whether a University employee or student, or a non-University-related individual, is seeking information about a student's enrollment or academic record, he/she will be referred to the Registrar's Office.

When presented by a law enforcement official with a court order for the production of any tangible items (including books, records, papers, documents, surveillance videotapes, electronic files, or other items), or a court order authorizing the installation of a pen register or trap and trace devices on wire or communication devices provided by the library, library staff members:
