The Seeley G. Mudd Library
Instructions for Scanning IMAGES
Preliminary Instructions:
- Make sure the scanner is on. The power switch is located near
the back of the scanner on the right side. Please contact a reference
librarian if the scanner is not operational. Log-on to the scanner
station.
- Place a picture or image face down on the scanner glass surface
and align it with the top right-hand corner.
- Select the scanner software. We recommend that you use Paint
Shop Pro to scan pictures and images.
- The HP Desk Scan II program, which you see as an icon on the
desktop, is opened and used intially by Paint Shop Pro. Images scanned
using Paint Shop Pro work are better than those scanned using HP Desk
Scan II only. If you experience any problems, check and find out if
you used HP Desk Scan II, and if so retry scanning in Paint Shop
Pro.
Paint Shop Pro: Scanning Pictures and Images
- Select the Paint Shop Pro icon. Before the program opens, the
'Browse for Folder' window will appear. At this point, select your
X-drive folder or A-drive diskette as the destination for saving an
image. Select O.K. When the File Format Associations window
appears select close. Paint Shop Pro will open. Please note that
you will have the option of saving your scans to a diskette or save to
your network folder once you are finished scanning.
- Next, from Paint Shop Pro File menu choose Import -->
TWAIN --> Acquire to scan an image.
- After scanning, the image will appear in the Desk Scan II window.
Desk Scan II evaluates the image and imposes a scan “type.” If you
would like to choose a different type of scan, select another type
from the Type, pull-down menu. For example, Desk Scan II might
scan an image as a Black and White Drawing type by default; you
might get better results by selecting the Black and White
Photograph type. If you are unsure which type to choose, use
Sharp Millions of Colors.
- Select and capture the portion of the image you want by using the
vertical/horizontal cursor. Notice the box shaped dash-outline on
the perimeter of the scanned image. Using the mouse, move the
cross-shaped cursor to the dash-outline and observe that the cursor
changes to a vertical or horizontal double-arrow shape. When the cross
shape cursor changes to a vertical or horizontal cursor, simultaneously
hold down the left mouse button and drag the double-arrow cursor to
outline the portion of the image you would like to capture. When the
desired area is marked, release the mouse button.
- When you are satisfied with the image adjustments made in Desk
Scan II, click the Final button. Paint Shop Pro will import
the image after the program finishes scanning. Click the Desk Scan
II close box. You can use Paint Shop Pro now to further adjust the
size and quality of your scan.
- When you finish adjusting your image in Paint Shop Pro, make sure
to save your file onto a diskette or to your campus directory.
To save your image, select Save As from the File menu.
A folder from your campus directory should appear, such as your
“Images” or "My Pictures” folder. Select a destination for your
scans, give your image file a name, select a graphic type, and click
the save button. If you plan to use an image on a Web page, select
the JPG (JPEG) or GIF file image type. JPG works best with images
that have many color values, while GIF works best when images have
large areas of one color.
- If you do not receive the “Images” or "My Pictures" campus
directory folder option after selecting Save As from the File menu,
you will need to select a destination for saving your image file(s).
From the "Save in" menu, select the "'ELDA'[X:]" drive and your campus
directory folder, or the A-drive. Name the image file, choose type of
image [JPG or GIF], and click the save button.
- Scan another image, or close Paint Shop Pro. Make sure to log-off
the scanner station when you finish.
