More about Estelle Reid and the Scholarship:
The following is an excerpt from The Lawrence Alumnus, 1961. The terms of the scholarship have changed since the scholarship was initially established
"Bequests totaling over $25,000 dollars were made to Lawrence college, it has recently been announced, in the will of Miss Estelle Rae (sic) Reid, a former Appleton resident who recently died in California. Endowments for Lawrence scholarships in graduate schools for journalism, art and library work, a cash gift for the purchase of books, preferbly in the art department, and all of her books at the time of her death comprised the bequest.
In her will Miss Reid set aside $15,000 in a trust to endow a scholarship in graduate journalism. The scholarship is to be awarded to some male student named by the president of the First Trust company of Appleton.
On the same basis she established two other funds of $25,000 each, the incomes of which were to be used as scholarships for graduate work in art, preferably at the Chicago Art Institute and in library work. There is no restriction as to the sex of the one to receive the art scholarship but the recipient of the scholarship in library science must be a woman. The recipients of all these are to be named by the presidents of Lawrence college and the First Trust company.
The scholarship in journalism which Miss Reid endowed is in memory of her father, Thomas B. Reid, former owner and editor of The Appleton Post."
