Collections

  • Main Collection and Online Catalog
    The Seeley G. Mudd Library contains over 600,000 bound volumes. Books, as well as journals, CDs, videos, atlases, and more, are cataloged in LUCIA, the library's online catalog.
  • New Books
    Selections from our new acquisitions are displayed for a limited time on the shelf near the circulation desk. Lists of selected new titles are also available online.
  • Music Collections
    The music collections currently include over 14,000 audio-visual items and over 18,000 musical scores in addition to reference works and other materials related to music in the main library collections. The Music Librarian can help you with questions relating to any aspect of research in music.
  • Media Collections
    In addition to an extensive music collection, the media collections include over 7,500 videotapes and DVDs, and nearly 3,000 spoken recordings.  The collections also include recordings of Lawrence University events and foreign language instructional tapes. Each item is cataloged and can be located through LUCIA, the library's online catalog. Most of the Media collections are located on the first floor of the library.
  • Electronic Resources
    The library is the virtual home of many electronic resources in a variety of forms. These resources include encyclopedias, reference works, indexes, full-text journals, and electronic books.They can be searched alphabetically or by discipline.
  • Periodicals
    Seeley G. Mudd Library subscribes to about 750 paper periodicals and over 65,000 e-journal titles. Be sure to check LUCIA, the library's online catalog, to verify what the library owns. Print journals are located on Level A. Addditional information on searching for e-journals can be found on the Magazines, Journals, and Newspapers page.
  • Visual Resources
    Located in the Wriston Art Center, the Visual Resources Library is where images are produced for the digital image databases in a wide range of subject areas from ancient architecture and illuminated manuscripts to contemporary art and photography. In addition to the 18,000 digital images available through the CONTENTdm digital image database, the visual resources library is the home to 50,000 analog slides.
  • Archives
    The University Archives collection has documents and artifacts of Lawrence University and Milwaukee-Downer College. Items in the Archives collection are non-circulating. For information on accessing items in the collection contact the University Archivist. The Archives are located on Level B.
  • Federal Government Documents
    The Library is part of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). Some of Lawrence's 320,000 government documents are in LUCIA, the library's online catalog -- but not many. Special finding aids are needed to locate most US goverment publication. Federal documents are located on the library’s second floor.
  • Wisconsin Documents
    The library is a "Selective Depository Library," which means that we receive a portion of the thousands of documents published by Wisconsin state agencies. Wisconsin documents are cataloged in LUCIA, the library catalog. The Wisconsin documents are located on the library's second floor.
  • Maps and Atlases
    The library's maps, and many newer atlases, are housed in the Map Collection, located on the second floor. The items in this collection do not circulate, but you are welcome to use them in the map area. There you will also find instructions for locating maps.
  • Special Non-Circulating Collections
    Please see a librarian in order to gain access to the following special collections:
    Milwaukee-Downer Room: Located on first floor near the reference desk.
    Lincoln Reading Room: Located on the first floor, in the northeast corner. Contains collections of books and other materials related to Abraham Lincoln and the U.S. Civil War.
  • Student Art in the Library
    " Senior Art Exhibition Purchase Award." The pieces in this collection are displayed throughout the library or have become part of the general university collection and are displayed elsewhere on campus.
    Student Art Installations. Since 1999, the library has played host to temporary art installations in the building. Because they are only displayed for a short period of time,  we have created an online exhibit of works shown since 2001.
  • Art in the Library
    In addition to the Student Art, the library owns additional works of art located on all floors of the building.
